Women in Islam

For all those who claim that Islam is unfair to women, maybe you would like to check out this post at Roora. It is quite interesting.

    Stop denial guys and FACE it islam is OPRESSING life not only women, unless people restudy it and try to apply the essence of it not this blurry sunnah, it will remain like this

    i admit that some things are misapplied now, due to mixing up culture and sciety rules with those of religion, and that is why things seems hard sometimes, and yes we should re study it and try to apply it properly. I have done that myself in several aspects in my life.

    but the sunnah in its own is of no fault. it has to be applied properly. it is blurry as you say sometimes because alot of people do not know that some ahadeeth are verified, while others maybe called "weak", meaning that they are not totally verifed. and the school to follow those or not is as follows ISA:

    if the hadith implicits no harm, and has no interference with other rules of sharia, then why not? ex. if there is a hadith saying it is good to say subhan Allah 100 times in the morning, then who wnats to follow it can, and those who don't, don't have to. this example i made up myself btw, just an example, while if a rule has some opressing nature, and it is weak, we are free to leave it (this is as far as i know wa Allaho A3lam).

    also a problem, is that alot of people stick to the petty details ex. have a beard or not? which are not crucial to our faith, thus causing unnecessary restrictions.

    1. The Qur’an likens a woman to a field (tilth), to be used by a man as he wills: “Your women are a tilth for you (to cultivate) so go to your tilth as ye will” (2:223);

    2. It declares that a woman’s testimony is worth half that of a man: “Get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her” (2:282);

    3. It allows men to marry up to four wives, and have sex with slave girls also: “If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice” (4:3);

    4. It rules that a son’s inheritance should be twice the size of that of a daughter: “Allah (thus) directs you as regards your children’s (inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females” (4:11);

    5. It tells husbands to beat their disobedient wives: “Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them” (4:34).

    It will take some creative rereading to blunt the force of these and other Qur’anic passages that mandate second-class status for women and consign all too many women in the Islamic world to the status of mere possessions of their husbands. That last verse has particularly troubling implications.

    The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences has determined that over nine out of ten Pakistani wives have been struck, beaten, or abused sexually — for offenses on the order of cooking an unsatisfactory meal. Others were punished for failing to give birth to a male child.

    Thanks Doshar. Interesting thoughts, but some of the references to preIslamic status of women may not be quite accurate;during the Greek period ,with Athena as one of the chief goddesses and the many others like Hera,Aphrodite etc, it's hard to believe that women were looked down upon.
    I would love for you to read and comment on two of my blogs pertaining to women in Islam.

    flanstein, you are welcome here as long as you are objective and discuss things calmly. please do not show any disrespect to Islam or muslims here, even if you do it on your own blog.

    about the points you mentioned in your second comment, you have alot you do not undestand. I think roora will elaborate about it in her next post ISA. it is simply too long to answer in a comment.

    I understand a great deal - obviously more than you know. I always try to be respectful of others beliefs, even when I don't share them. However, I don't know how I can be respectful of a belief system that has its adherants treating women so badly.

    If muslim men treat muslim women so badly, then what has gone wrong with your faith?

    that is the point you don't see, if some muslim men treat women badly, then they are not really "adherents" to islamic teachings. the statement is thus void.

    Since muslim men believe that your koran is the exact words from your god, then when they hear this:

    "And take in your hand a green branch and beat her with it and do not break your oath;" Q. 38:44

    Perhaps they that beating their wives might be a good thing if they call themselves good muslims?

    If that is true, it is hardly a cultural problem, but rather a sickness endemic to the religion itslef.

    How many women have been beaten to death in Europe and in the US? They are non Moslems aren't they?

    Why is it that Islam is always held responsible for ill manners. THe green branch you spoke of was explained by the Prophet to be like a miswak, something as big as a tooth brush with the same use and in its same thickness only lighter!!!!

    What do you think of women that have been beaten up with baseball bats? (orginally made in the United States).

    Do you by any chance watch Oprah? I hope you do, because if u did regularly, there was an entire episode about women applying and actually studying in Academies of the United States Navy or Airforce i think. They came up front, five beautiful young ladies with shocking information.

    I will only mention a bit. As they are submitting their applications and are about to get enrolled they are advised to always keep birth control pills and are told that they are most likely to get raped by fello cadets or higher ranking officers on the base!!!! how about that? IT WAS ON OPRAH, not on an Islamic talk show, and OPRAH happens to be one of the most respected women in the United States. I personally rever the woman because she exposes so many hidden issues that even some Americans are not aware of or try to ignore!

    On another show, a town somewhere in the United States have men that are encouraged by Church to marry as many women as possible. In one case a man was married to more than one hundred and something women. Young ladies at ages starting 13 get married by force and do not have the right to say no. One man married one of his daughters!

What beating would that really cause??? It is just to make them laugh silly! Be a bit creative and imaginitive my friend, imaine ur wife is being a nuisance, and you tell her i will beat you, and you jump at her then from behind your back you come up with a 15 cms light wooden stick and you hit her on the but, what effect do you think that might have.. If you are in love, she will forget what she was bugging you about and laugh asking what the hell do you think you were gonna do with that insignificat piece of no good thing??? Then you smile at her and tell her you love her and wanted to get her out of the mood!


    And what relgion or ethics or even morals agree to using baseball bats? or chairs? or whatever????

    i see that most of what you are complaining about is the way Islam treats women, have you noticed that all those who contradict you (myself , roora, loulou, dalulla, others) are all women?

    does that tell you anything?

    if we are so opressed, wouldn't we be willing to agree with you, or at least, be silent and not contradict you so?
